BOOZY MUNICH
Do you love beer? Then obviously you need to visit Munich. Here is a play by play of how I drank and ate my way through this historical city in 48 hours.
Arriving by bus from Lake Bled to Munich; yes there is a direct bus between this two locations. You can get it for less than 20 euros and the scenery is spectacular!
The Euro Hostel is a nice affordable option for a quick stay, really clean, good location and the bar downstairs is great for a drink before or after you get shitfaced in the town pubs.
Essentials covered, let’s get to the meat and potatoes…
Your first stop needs to be to Hofbräuhaus. This place is unique. Filled with life. Undoubtedly, one of the best nights of my life. 2 regrets: not staying longer and not ordering the pork knuckle.
In case you didn’t know, it is the world’s most famous beer hall. Built in 1607 and originally used as a brewery. It was remodeled after the brewery moved to a new site in the suburbs.
There are more than 100 active groups of regular visitors of which the oldest have held their table for 70 years. This comes as no surprise as the place is simply magical. Hosting year-round events and live music.
Not to mention the locals just love their beer and of course their culture. Still wearing their traditional ensemble even on a regular Tuesday night; feather in hat included.
Munich is much unlike its sister city of Berlin where if you ask for a currywurst be prepared to get spat on.
After you’ve been drunk and fed hit Munich’s main square, the Marienplatz. An iconic part of the Old Town for over 900 years. While Marienplatz may not host a market theses days, the square still buzzes, as it’s home to a busy U-Bahn station and it’s an iconic tourist location.
Being located near a massive shopping area certainly also helps and it is also the starting point of many walking tours. The Square is lined with historic sights, but it’s the quirky Glockenspiel – a cuckoo clock-style statuette show that takes place on the facade of the New Town Hall each day - that fascinates many. (Not me, of course, I just went for the beer)
Across the Hofbräuhaus is the Augustiner. It’s lame. The food is nothing to write home about. Do not make the same mistake I did of hopping over from Hofbräuhaus, it will not be worth it. And please don’t order the chicken schnitzel.
The morning after best cure is definitely Bergwolf’s currywurst. It’s a totally unpretentious small shaky place. I was even a bit scared when I first walked in, it’s dark and moody. Regardless, it was the best decision ever. That is of course you want to try this local dish.
The sausages and sauce will leave you craving more while the chips are perfectly cooked. Crunchy on the outside and soft inside. Mouth watering.
Afterwords, have a bit of stroll to bring down the cholesterol. Why not drop in a Tesla shop, where the store manager will clearly know of the bat you are not going to make a purchase. Just say you want to have a look and why not even feel the nice fancy interior.
After you are done roaming around you might be craving a sugar rush. Unfortunately, I followed the opinion of the internet which raves about funnel cakes at Schmalznudel Cafe Frischut.
Quite frankly I don’t know where to begin…There is no justification for the amount of calories this doughy, low quality sugar plasto has.
In Panama, we have a similar thing called hojaldras, served savory or smothered in white comatose sugar, just like Munich’s. The difference is that this ones are bathed in fat, lack character and gave me heartburn. Don’t even bother, honestly!
From here on I can only say to you two things…
The first one is just walk around and enter every pub that calls your attention. If you are lucky like you might find one where Freddy Mercury was a regular during his time there. You might even be offered snuff from a cop.
And the second one is that around the corner from the Youth Hostel you might find a Uighur restaurant serving some of the most exciting dishes I have ever tried. This food is typical of Kashgar, China. A region that blends chinese and indian cuisine into a unique and splendid combination.
